Birch wood has a fine, even texture and a subtle grain, and a finished birch floor can range from soft, pale shades to deep, dark stains. That range is what makes birch wood flooring such an adaptable flooring option, since the same species can suit a bright, modern room or a darker, more traditional one.

Wood is a natural material, so expect some variation in color and grain from plank to plank; it's part of the character of a real hardwood floor. Before you commit, think about where the floor will go, how it will be installed and how much daily foot traffic it will see. Our guide on how to choose the right hardwood floor walks through those decisions, and a sample viewed in your own light is still the most reliable way to judge color.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of birch flooring are there?

Birch flooring comes in two main constructions. Solid birch is solid wood throughout, while engineered birch pairs a birch top layer with a multi-layered core. In this collection, the Sonoma floors are solid hardwood, and the Shadowbrook floors are 3/8-inch engineered hardwood with a multi-layered core. Our comparison of engineered vs. solid hardwood covers the trade-offs in more detail.

Do birch floors scratch easily?

No hardwood floor is scratch-proof. Every floor here has a UV-cured urethane finish, which the listings describe as protecting against scratches. Dirt and grit can still scratch the surface, so the cleaning guides linked on each product page recommend regular sweeping and felt pads under furniture.

How are birch floors installed?

It depends on the construction. The solid Sonoma floors are listed for nail-down installation, while the engineered Shadowbrook floors can be glued, nailed or floated. The solid hardwood instructions linked on the Sonoma listings call for at least 48 hours of acclimation, or whatever the manufacturer recommends. We don't offer installation, so whoever lays the floor should follow the installation instructions linked on each product page.

How do you clean birch hardwood floors?

Sweep with a soft-bristle broom or vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment, then use a dry or slightly damp microfiber mop. For spills and stains, spray a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner onto the mop or cloth rather than the floor, and dry the surface right away. Avoid soaking-wet mops, steam cleaners and harsh chemicals such as ammonia or bleach. The solid hardwood cleaning guide also advises against polish on prefinished floors, since it can leave a cloudy look.
