Glue down vinyl flooring is installed by spreading adhesive directly over the subfloor and pressing each plank into place, which creates a strong, permanent bond. Our installation guide describes the result as a solid, stable surface with a seamless look, and notes that a glue-down floor can also help cut down on noise.

That bond depends on good preparation, though. A glue-down project calls for a clean, dry, smooth subfloor, the right adhesive and time for it to cure, so it's worth planning the job before the planks arrive. Our vinyl floor installation tips cover what to expect, and a free sample is a simple way to check color and texture in your own space first.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the specifications of Foundation vinyl planks?

Every Foundation plank is 6 by 48 inches and 2 mm thick, made from virgin vinyl with a 6 mil wear layer and a ceramic bead and aluminum oxide finish. Each box covers 40 square feet. Three colors have a natural grain texture, while Balmy has a smooth texture.

What subfloor does glue down vinyl plank flooring need?

The installation guide linked on each product page calls for a subfloor that is clean, dry, and smooth, and free of grease, paint, wax, or debris that could affect adhesion. Dips and cracks should be filled with a leveling compound, with no more than 3/16 inch of unevenness over a 10-foot span. On concrete, test for moisture first and apply a moisture barrier if the test calls for one.

How are Foundation planks installed?

Following the linked guide, let the planks sit flat in the room, still in their packaging, for at least 48 hours. Spread a pressure-sensitive adhesive recommended by the manufacturer with a notched trowel, wait for it to turn tacky, then press each plank into place with seams staggered at least 6 inches. Roll the whole floor with a 100-pound flooring roller, keep foot traffic off it for 24 to 48 hours while the adhesive cures, and leave a slight gap when refitting baseboards or trim. We don't offer installation, so whoever lays the floor should follow the guide closely.

Can Foundation planks be used in commercial spaces?

Foundation's warranty covers light commercial use, not general commercial use. Alongside a 20-year residential limited warranty, the line carries a 5-year light commercial limited warranty. The warranty defines light commercial as condos, apartments, hotel rooms, small retail shops and waiting rooms, and excludes common areas in condos, hotels or apartments, large retail stores and spaces with constant rolling loads.

How do you clean glue down vinyl plank floors?

Sweep with a soft-bristle broom or vacuum on a hard floor setting to pick up loose dirt, and use a dry mop or microfiber pad for dust. For a weekly clean, use a damp (not soaking) mop with a mild vinyl floor cleaner, then dry the floor to prevent water spots. The cleaning guide linked on each product page advises against soap-based detergents, wax, ammonia, bleach and steam mops. Our article on maintaining vinyl floors has more long-term care tips.
